The purpose of the 340B program is to enable covered entities to stretch scarce federal resources as far as possible, reaching more eligible patients and providing more comprehensive services.
- Only covered entities (CEs) that are actively enrolled in the 340B program are eligible;
- DSH is largest group: DSH >11.75% AND either state/local government owned or Private, non-profit with state or local govt contract to provide indigent care;
- For-profit entities are never eligible for participation;
- For Grantees and Others – typically no additional criteria for eligibility; participation in a specified program is sufficient to allow enrollment for these entities.
